Are motivation and dedication different ideas? This article uses a practical model to connect them with the goals you choose. Reflection may help you pursue a goal more deliberately or choose one that fits you better.
Motivation is what moves you to act. Hunger prompts eating, cold prompts seeking warmth and enjoyment may prompt a favourite activity.
Intrinsic motivation comes from the activity itself. Extrinsic motivation involves an outcome or reward beyond the activity. There are therefore many reasons for the same outward behaviour.
Dedication describes commitment
In this model, dedication describes how strongly you are committed to a particular goal. It can range from interest to sustained commitment through difficulty.
Someone who is merely interested may stop when the work becomes uncomfortable. A highly dedicated person is willing to make substantial effort and sacrifices. This is a useful distinction for reflection, not a precise psychological measurement.
Commitment has a cost
Extreme dedication can harm health, relationships and other priorities. A goal can become so dominant that the costs continue after the pursuit ends.
It is important to notice warning signs and consider your underlying values. What are you willing to give up? What boundaries should remain protected? Achieving a target is not automatically worth every possible sacrifice.
A way to think about the journey
The original article illustrates the relationship with a conceptual graph. Progress towards the goal lies along one axis; willingness to persist lies along the other. As difficulty increases, you may reach the goal or encounter a limit to the effort you are prepared to make.

The illustration is a prompt to examine whether the goal and your commitment match. Real progress is rarely a smooth curve, and motivation can change with learning, support and circumstances.
If the goal does not matter enough to justify its demands, reconsider it. Choosing a more meaningful objective can be more useful than spending energy on one you do not truly want.
Motivation gives action a reason. Dedication describes the commitment you bring to a particular objective. Both should be considered alongside the physical, psychological and social costs of the journey.
